Earth Day 2026

Small thoughtful steps in the right direction can make your home more sustainable, especially if you have a local home interiors retailer who can help support your goals

It can feel overwhelming to try and make our home sustainable beyond the day-to-day tasks of recycling, cutting down on over-packaged products at the supermarket, and composting food waste to nourish our gardens and potted plants.

These are now part of our everyday lives, but approaching sustainable interior design and furniture choices is the harder part, or is it?

Only if you think it has to be done to perfection and all done now. Think, instead, about making a start and doing your best within your ability and budget according to your needs as they develop in a given moment. It doesn’t have to be an all or nothing approach.

Spring is the perfect time to make a start as it’s a natural reset when days are longer and there seems to be more time and energy to do things. A decorating project can benefit from VOC-free paint. It’s a small step but a considered one which can be developed over time as other rooms in the home require a lick of emulsion.

It’s helped, too, by the motivating Earth Day, now in its 46th year, which we celebrate on 22 April to honour the achievements of the environmental movement, so think of it as a mark on the calendar, a starting date to begin assessing our homes, what purchases we need to make over the coming months and how to make those as sustainable as possible. It’s actually easier than you think to have a stylish home reflecting your own style while causing less harm to our environment.

Considered Curation - fast interiors are out, thoughtful purchases are in

We’ve all been there, needing a new bedsofa or table, but budget dictates spending on something of lesser quality which will chip or break in the shorter term. It’s a false economy but there is a way around it to get the quality and longevity you want.

Consider applying for Humm financing and spread the payments interest-free. Just click on the item you’ve chosen here on our website, and under the price details you’ll see the Humm link for the monthly repayment plan.

Biophilic Design - introducing plant life and the colours of nature

Plants not only add life and finish to an interior but with a strong curation of different types they help to improve air quality whether they are perched on a mantlepiece or bookshelf, or you’ve chosen a tall specimen to occupy a corner and give height to a room.

If plant parenting is not your thing, chose accessories with florals and foliage prints, especially cushions and art to get the theme and feel more in tune with nature.

Conscious Consumption - budget-friendly buys

According to Community Resources Network Ireland, over 1.2 million of potentially reusable bulky items, including furniture, are sent to landfill or incineration on the island of Ireland every year.

It’s believed a significant portion of this is driven by ‘fast furniture’ culture, and its use of low-quality, plastic-based materials which are difficult to recycle.

To help play a part in countering this, an outlet store in Boucher Road Outlet Store, stocks discontinued lines and floor models for up to 90% off, keeping them out of landfill, as does a Special Offers section on the website.

Repair and Reduce - from caring for your furniture to carbon reduction

A focus on quality furniture which will stand the test of time is supported by service technicians who are trained to restore and repair your furniture if it has fallen foul of some kiddie high jinks or the family pet. If you have concerns about how your furniture might be damaged by family life, take a look at the Guardsman five-year service plan for stains or cosmetic damage.

Even how furniture is delivered is considered. Trucks are fully loaded and take the most fuel-efficient routes to reduce carbon emissions, helped further by a recent investment in a new fleet of MAN trucks designed for fuel efficiency.

Giving Back - helping nature, education and the community

EZ Living Interiors partners with Hometree, a nature restoration charity based in the west of Ireland, as part of its sustainability drive.

A commitment to planting 2,400 native Irish trees at a Hometree site and carrying out six planting projects with local schools is just one aspect. To mark Earth Day this year, Hometree provided a selection of saplings for staff to leave their screens, roll up their sleeves and get planting and connecting with nature.

It’s part of a broader environmentally friendly drive where trees planted four years ago are starting to mature, with current developments at the headquarters and distribution campus including solar panelling initiatives, wild flower meadow seeding, and landscaping. It nods to the rural history of its Little Island, Co. Cork location, and helps to mitigate the urban and industrial development there in recent decades.
