5 Modern Living Room Ideas for 2020
Planning to update your living space? Get inspired with our modern living room ideas for 2020.
1. Reflect Your Style With Mirrored & Glass Furniture
Instantly modernise your living room with a beautiful piece of statement mirrored furniture, such as a coffee table or console table. Using furniture and accessories featuring a mirrored or glass surface is a great way to make a space feel brighter and bigger. The reflective nature of these pieces bounce light, so they are an excellent option for windowless rooms. What’s more, glass and mirrored furniture work well with every kind of colour palette, so there are no limitations in terms of style.
2. Go Green With The Botanical Look
“Nature holds the key to our aesthetic, intellectual, cognitive and even spiritual satisfaction.” – E.O. Wilson, Biologist
One of the fastest growing home trends for 2020, the botanical look is all about bringing the outdoors in. To incorporate this style into your living room décor, choose a colour palette that includes refreshing and serene colours from the natural world and accent with revitalising shades of green throughout. Furnish with pieces that use natural materials and finish off with some in-season flowers and houseplants. The truly brave may even want to have a stab at creating their own Living Wall (i.e. an interior structure comprising vertical panels of plants). Not only is the use of greenery on-trend, but it also has many health benefits including stress reduction and air purification.

3. Make Your Living Room Shine With Metallic Accents
Add some shine to your living room with metallic accents. These look simply stunning when set against plush fabrics and rich colours, or even when combined with more subdued pieces. While rose gold dominated the interiors world in 2018, for 2020 designers are instead using a mixture of more muted metals such as copper and brass.
So, what do you need to know about the metallic trend? Here are our top three tips for decorating with metallics:
- If you are nervous about trying out the mixed metal look, then stick with similar tones throughout.
- Alternatively, choose one dominant colour in a warm or cool tone and a secondary colour in a contrasting tone. Warm metals include brass, copper and gold, and cool options include any silver-toned metal such as aluminium or stainless steel.
- Pay attention to the finish of the metal as this can change the feel of a room – with brightly polished metals exuding a sense of glam, while brushed metals will create more of a casual rustic look.
4. Take the Perfect #Shelfie
Over the past year, shelf styling has taken over our Instagram feeds. In fact, just a cursory search for the term #shelfie fetches over 1.5 million posts. If you would like to jump on the shelfie trend, we recommend going for display units and other storage furnishings that feature an open shelving design. This is a great way to show off all your favourite knick-knacks while also bringing colour, personality, and life into the living room. To get that Pinterest-perfect look, arrange your items by height or colour. It’s also a good idea to take inspiration from the room's colour palette so that your display ties in nicely with the overall look of the space.

5. Statement Rugs
One of our favourite modern living room ideas for 2020, a well-picked statement rug can completely transform the feel of a space. Typically featuring an unusual colour combination, a striking pattern, or an interesting texture; statement rugs can add instant oomph to otherwise neutral living areas. To ensure that your rug complements the overall colour palette, it may be a good idea to refer to the 60-30-10 rule:
- 60% of the room should be in the “hero colour”. This provides a backdrop for furnishings and is typically used on the walls and sofas.
- 30% refers to the “secondary colour” which supports the main colour. This is where your rug colour choice will come in.
- 10% of the room will be taken up by an “accent colour” which will appear on home accessories and artwork.
To find the right fit, first measure the seating area and select a rug the closest size up. This will create a more unified look as all of the furniture legs will rest on the rug. Use furniture coasters to protect your rug in the long-run.
