New Home Essentials - Things to Buy

Moving into a new home is hugely exciting and it’s tempting to completely overhaul the interiors (if it’s a second hand property) or decorate every room (if it’s a new build). While budget might not allow this option anyway, it’s advisable not to do it all in one swoop because it’s only through experiencing your new living conditions and surroundings that you’ll get a feel for what you need to do and what needs immediate change. Things like the areas of natural light only become apparent after you’ve lived in the property so these elements will help you focus your priorities. Naturally, you have to sort the basics for example, a bed / mattress, sofa and if your budget can stretch to it, a dining table. We have handy buying guides on those on our Interior Design Inspiration page to help you through your research. There are of course a few items that will make your new home immediately more amenable and won’t dissuade your long term interior goals and we’ve compiled the advice below into five ideas!

1. Plants

Plants are a quick and easy way to make your new home appear cosier and lived in. They are widely available, are inexpensive and you can add some of your interiors’ taste through your choice of plant pot and accessories. Plants can be hung from the ceiling especially if they are of a cascading style such as Ivy and you will find suitably sized plants no matter how big or small your new space actually is. If you’ve tried plants in the past and have failed miserably in terms of keeping them alive, you should check out this good guide on keeping plants alive.

2. Side Tables

You’ll likely have lots of callers to your new home who want to wish you well and you’re likely to have a glass of wine or a cup of tea to welcome them and to celebrate. Where will everyone place their cups or glasses? One, or even a few side tables are an astute and purse-friendly addition to your starter furniture collection. The beauty of something like a side table is that they don’t need to blend in; they can be standalone pieces in their own right. There are some wonderful space-saving side tables such as the Kris side tables that can sit in on top of each other neatly if not in use.

3. Lighting

New lighting fixtures vary hugely in price but budget options are widely available and can look amazing; they can also bring alive a redundant corner by adding focus. A vintage style lighting fixture can add real character to a room for very little monetary outlay. Consider adding some lamps around the likes of a living room and the addition of a lamp table again won’t collapse your budget but it will add to your cosiness and comfort. Currently we’re loving the Cody Matted Black floor lamp for its distinctive character.

4. Mirrors

Not least for the practicalities in terms of having something to check your appearance in before you leave the house, a mirror or series of mirrors are a really clever and practical addition to your new home. Mirrors will fit in with most decor styles that you decide upon down the road and they can also, with careful placement, make a room appear larger than it is. We love the dark oak finish of the Turin landscape mirror which can create a wonderful focal point in a room; it would also be perfectly at home in the entrance hall to make a great first impression.

5. Rugs

Rugs are a great way to add texture, comfort and an instant injection of style in a home. You don’t have to commit to a rug long term in that you can change it up easily after a few years; this is in comparison to a new carpet which requires a larger outlay of savings. Rugs come in many sizes, textures and colours so it really allows you to bring out your playful side especially in the early stages of your new home! A rug like the Abstract Grey Line rug is a lovely choice as it adds comfort and unique design to a room; it will also allow you to section out an area for example in a kitchen / living room.
